The Aeneid, Starred Review. Princeton scholar Fagles observes up hellos celebrated Iliad and Odyssey with a new, fast-moving, readable rendition of the national epic of historical Rome. Virgil's long-renowned narrative applys the Trojan battlerior Aeneas as he consists of hellos family from hellos besieged, fallen home, ceases in Carthage for a doomed love affair, discuss withs the underworld and locateds in Italy, thru difficult combat, the contracts so that it will turn into, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English clean verse. Fagles selects to forgo meter completely, which lets him stay literal when he needs, and develop eloquent when he needs: "Aeneas flies beforehand, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open boxs like a cloudburst wiping out the solar." A huge preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in historical past, whereas Fagles himself appends a put upscript and notes.
